We might laugh about just how easy it is to predict what men are into, food, sex, beer? Yet how often do we find ourselves 2 weeks out of our nearest (perhaps too near in lock down) and dearest birthday with absolutely no clue what to get them. I know I do. Luckily, this year I’ve asked early and will share the thought wealth with you.

So what makes a good gift according to my boyfriend?

A good gift, the most memorable and amazing gifts—are the ones where someone has genuinely listened and seen what I'm into—the kind of gift that I would never get myself, but would find really interesting and useful.

Not at all a high ask...

And I’m still a little confused, so I asked for some examples—so here these are along with the why.

Fragrance

There is a good reason why perfume makes such a great gift for your other half. So much of our perception is framed by smell—rounded by what that someone is to the other person—perfume can make for a very personal gift.

Magazine Subscription

Magazines may have been considered old fashioned a few years ago, but they are back in a big way (and the digital adds a whole new dimension). There‘s something really lovely about holding a fresh glossy publication in your hands (plus the gift echoes out to 12 gifts a year instead of just one, twelve times the thought). It is also a very personal gift—it shows that you know what he’s into. Logan is a writer on the digital fringe, so for him it is the New Yorker, The Atlantic or Wired.

Skill-Based Gifts

These gifts can come within one of two categories: either a course that a person can do or a gift that will allow them to learn. This can be a simple as a short course or something that will allow your partner to take a short course such a as an iPad/web platform subscription.

Skincare

A man will like a good moisturiser as much as anyone. This is really perfect, because as women we probably know a little more about skincare than most men and are perfectly suited to get the best products. This gift is on the rise with the health conscious man.

Non-Monetary Gifts

From a road trip you have planned, or a recipe he can cook—you can really get creative here. What matters is that you have put in the effort, thought and time researching the idea and he can participate in the gift.

Price: Free or pretty close to it

What have I learned here? It‘s not the money spent, but truely the thought that counts.

And a bit of background research really doesn’t hurt.
