When you are obsessed with all things vintage you very quickly learn just how cyclical fashion is — this autumn/winter season 90s fashion is back in a big way and I am loving it. Is there anything better to seek inspiration from than vintage Chanel, Calvin Klein, Prada and Hermes looks on the iconic 90s supermodels?
Here are the four 90s trends I will be wearing in Melbourne’s chilly autumn.
A Layered Suit Look
While for the last few years the suit has been a standalone statement — at most paired with cool heels or a statement handbag — this season I am layering. I‘m getting creative here - a collar undershirt or a turtleneck, all kinds of vests, a sweater thrown over the blazer, an oversized long coat, the gloves are coming out too. It’s chic and warm.
The Minimal Monochromatic Look
The minimal monochromatic look may be simple, but do not underestimate it — nothing can look quite as effortlessly elevated. This season I’m adding stockings, belts, simple footwear and again, I’m loving the knit over the shoulder look. Calvin Klein and Hermes runways in the late 90s are the ultimate inspiration for this kind of looks.
The Skirt (or Dress) Suit
Wear a suit but make it sexy — the skirt (and dress) suits are perfect for a work meeting in the afternoon then cocktails with your girlfriends in the evening. Here I’m looking for that perfect balance of quality tailoring and the mini length for a chic and classic look — taking inspiration from some perfect Chanel and Calvin Klein runways.
The 90s Cardigan Look
Minimal or not, a cardigan look can be seriously cool and sexy. Who would’ve though I was saying this a few years ago? I’m loving cardigans in both neutral minimal outfits (such as those inspired by Prada and Calvin Klein runways) and with some fun colourful looks - like those from the 1995 Tod Oldham Studio runway show.
What I love the most about all of these four trends is that you can find so many original 90s statement pieces in op-shops, vintage stores, on pre-loved fashion resale platforms or even just by rampaging your mum’s old clothes. It‘s the perfect way you be a more sustainable lover of fashion by recycling and to save money — not to mention the thrill of funding that unique original piece.
Happy hunting!
