We all know that the fashion industry is not in a good place at present - the over production, over consumption, the trend driven aesthetic - yet we are often too distracted by the trends, the sponsored posts and the ads to see an alternative.

Luckily the kind of future of fashion we would be proud to be a part of already exists and it’s easier than you think.

I’m here to advertise for better ways to be a lover of fashion - here is how.

Don’t Shop, Invest

The first time I bought an expensive pair of jeans was my turning point - for the next 2 years I wore these particularly every weekend and didn’t feel like I needed to update my look.

When you buy the perfect piece, you will feel great wearing it. When you buy fewer items, your wardrobe will be easier to navigate - it’s simpler to get dressed in the morning. When you invest into quality, you will be wearing it year after year, so there is no need to spend money on updating your look.

Another amazing thing about buying quality investment pieces is that you can usually resell these later on - you get some of your money back and the piece gets a new life.

Build a Capsule Wardrobe

There is no need to update those perfect jeans each season (seriously, how many pairs of blue jeans can a person have?!) or get the trendy summer top, because we all know that a quality white shirt will go with waaaay more items in your existing wardrobe.

Building a capsule wardrobe is like building a house - you need solid basics for foundations, some investment pieces (such as a coat, a bag and a pair of great boots) to act as the strong walls and maybe a few dresses, pretty tops and some accessories on top of all that - but it all has to come together.

Oh, and when you renovate, you only replace sections - you work with what you already have and you know where it all fits.

Buy Pre-Loved Instead

You know those perfect investment pieces I talked about earlier? Well, if you don’t want to invest too heavily, you can always buy pre-loved instead of brand new. This way you can build a wardrobe full of quality pieces without breaking the bank - you can buy a vintage Louis Vuitton for less than a quarter of it’s original price tag.

For me the most exciting aspect is that you can find those edgy unique pieces - the kind that will make you stand out of the crowd all while minimising the impact of your shopping on the environment.

There are now so many places to shop pre-loved fashion - Vestiaire Collective, Depop and AirRobe are just a few of my favorites.

Being a better fashion lover is all about being smart with what you buy - quality fashion will last a long time - so choose well, invest into fewer perfect pieces and your wallet, your wardrobe and the environment will thank you for it.
