I went plant based almost 5 years ago because I wanted to be healthy and environmentally conscious and it just stuck. There are so many benefits to eating plant based for me - I love fruits and veggies - I find so much inspiration cooking plant based, I’ve lost a bunch of weight without even trying - all while my energy levels, my skin and gut health have been great, I love the fact that my eating habits don‘t cause suffering to other living creature and minimise my impact on the environment.

I'm not very strict with my diet though - at home I eat plant based, but I will allow myself an occasional diary treat when I travel. I find that suits my lifestyle and is not too constricting which is such a massive factor that determines if you can stick to something long term. This is how (I try my best) to do plant based.

Researching nutrition

I read a lot about nutrition when I first went plant based - I educated myself on how much protein, oil, etc. I need for my body type and my lifestyle. During the week I do my best to stick to my diet and hit my macros which usually means home cooked balanced meals. We buy a lot of fruit and veggies and I try to have fruit, nuts and smoothies with vegan protein powder most days. I can be quite slack on the weekends though and love our Saturday night pizzas or an occasional takeaway.

Plant based versions of your favourite meals

Over the years I have learned to make plant based versions of most of my favourite dishes, so I never feel like I’m missing out. So yes, those Saturday night pizzas with vegan cheese are a must and so are burgers, tacos and a veggie roast. Although the fake meats may not always be the healthiest option, these products can be very fun to try and a very satisfying occasional meal to keep you on track.

Taking regular supplements

I try to get it all through food, but I know that can impossible when you live a busy life in the city. I am currently taking a multi vitamin designed for vegan lifestyle with a good dose of B12. I take DHA-EPA Omega 3 supplements to ensure that my body always has sufficient nutrients to work it’s best long term. Hemp oil is also fabulous for getting those essential “good” fats. I have taken Spirulina supplements on and off in the past and would definitely recommend these, too!

Lots vegan treats

I have always had the biggest sweet tooth - I grew up in Russia where tea and treats after every meal is customary. Nowadays I try to keep the amount of processed sugar I consume to a minimum, but will allow myself a vegan ice cream, chocolate of cookies two or three times a week.

The fact that you can’t buy good vegan treats on every corner definitely helps me not make those impulse treat purchases. However, when I occasionally go to a vegan bakery I will surely treat myself.

Knowing the best vegan spots

I would highly recommend doing lots of research on the best plant based cafes, restaurants and bakeries in your area. That way if you are feeling like you miss something you can go and eat an amazing plant based version of that meal or, better yet, try something new!

Likely we live in Melbourne, so most cafes and restaurants offer vegan options. The shots used in this article were taken at Short Straw Hawthorn that does the most amazing veggie/vegan brekky options of their regular dishes.

We also have some real plant based gems spread all over the city. Some of my favourite vegan/vegetarian spots are the Red Sparrow Pizza in Collingwood, Sister of Soul in St Kilda, Admiral Cheng Ho in Abbotsford, Smith an Deli and Young Green in Fitzroy.

Getting regular blood tests and speaking to a doctor or a nutritionist

Whether you are plant based or not, I would definitely recommend that you get an annual blood test just to make sure that you’re giving your body everything it needs. This is particularly important when you are on a plant based lifestyle. If you have any concerns about your wellbeing, please speak to your healthcare professional, as no amount of “online advice” will ever replace that.

Most importantly, I try to eat intuitively and give my body the healthy version of what it is craving. I believe that we are what we eat and treat my body well as it's with me for the long run.

Lots of Love,

Lena
