We saw some incredible fashion at Melbourne Fashion Festival 2021 - from sharp tailoring and perfectly deconstructed garments at Camilla & Marc, Ellery and Aje, to whimsical masterpieces by Paolo Sebastian, Joslin and Toni Maticevski (and, shall we say, everything in between).

It’s all about vintage inspired masculine silhouettes in feminine fabrics
The standout Melbourne fashion trends of 2021 are oversized silhouettes, perfectly deconstructed tailoring and lots of draping in an earthy natural colour palette. I loved seeing so many takes on classic looks and shapes (I’m obsessed with the entire Camilla & Marc collection) — pieces that are not only runway chic, but also incredibly versatile and wearable an a woman’s wardrobe.
Gone are the days when a pretty floral pattern or a bright colour did all of heavy lifting for a garment — the devil’s in the cut this season. And, boy oh boy, there were some pretty incredible cuts and shapes on the runway — Toni Maticevski outdid himself (as usual) whilst Ellery’s ability to reinvent classic piece never season to amaze me.
Some trends are not coming back – patterns and purposefully frumpy looks are out, yay! Burmuda shots and culottes are finally gone, too! Phew! Us short girls will have endless legs in wide leg trousers and those fabulous Viktoria & Woods knee high boots.
I have created a little recap of some of my favorite looks from the runways of Melbourne Fashion Festival — ranked from the least to the most whimsical below.
Camilla & Marc
Viktoria & Woods
Ellery
Aje
Tony Maticevski
Joslin
Paolo Sebastian
This was the first time I attended Melbourne Fashion Festival — it is something I’ve always wanted to do, yet timing never aligned and then came the pandemic. Coming out on the other end of it, there was certainty a very special vibe to the events — not only appreciating the amazing pool of designer talent we have here in Melbourne, but also just how lucky we are here in Australia.
Which looks are your favourites?
Lots of love,
Lena
